Oil Pulling is an ancient detoxification practice that involves swishing oil around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. The benefit of doing this is to reduce the amount of harmful bacteria, reduce dental plaque, remineralize your teeth, help with gum issues, and strengthen your gums. You can give your teeth an extra boost by oil pulling with essential oils.
When you swish oil around in your mouth, plaque get stuck to the oil and dissolve in the liquid oil. So you are removing a lot of bacteria, which is found in plague and leads to all kinds of oral health problems, every time you oil pull.
What Oil to Use:
Traditionally, sesame seed or sunflower oil was used among the early oil-pullers, however, my personal favorite is coconut oil because it has so many health benefits. You can use any oil that you like, just stay away from canola or vegetable oil.
Adding Essential Oils to Your Oil Pulling Regime:
Adding in therapeutic-grade, 100% pure, essential oils into your oil pulling regime is a great way to give your health a supercharge! Only use therapeutic-grade essential oils. These oils are safe to use as a dietary supplement (internally) and since you are swishing them around in your mouth, you need to use the safest. I buy my essential oils at wholesale price and I encourage you to do the same! You can CLICK HERE and learn how to get your essential oils from me at wholesale cost!
What Essential Oils to Use:
- Peppermint essential oil.
- Clove essential oil.
- Basil essential oil.
- Melaleuca essential oil.
- Myrrh essential oil.
- “Protective” blend essential oil.
Coconut Oil Bites for Oil Pulling:
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup of coconut oil (you will have a little amount left over)
- 24-48 drops of therapeutic grade essential oil (see recommendations above)
DIRECTIONS:
- Melt the coconut oil.
- Pour into silicone mold (I like this one. It is .3 ounce which is nearly a tablespoon…perfect amount to swish around) .
- Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to each individual mold.
- Stick in the fridge to harden.
- Once hard, pop out of the silicone mold and store on the counter or fridge. If you live in a warmer climate, you will want to keep it in the fridge.
- Happy oil pulling!

How often should you use the oil pulling bites on you teeth.
The Paleo Mama says
I like to oil pull first thing in the morning!
Annalaura Brown says
I love this idea. So clever. I’ve tried oil pulling but this would make it so much easier.
The Paleo Mama says
Thank you!
Jess says
I’m sorry I’m just a little confused. Do you melt the little bites then before putting one in your mouth, or pop it in whole and let it melt, or…? Thanks!
The Paleo Mama says
Let them melt in your mouth
Krystal says
how long do you swish?
The Paleo Mama says
15 minutes or so!
jill says
could you use ice cube trays?
The Paleo Mama says
They would make WAY TO BIG bites!
Sarah says
I use this mini ice cube tray that came with my mini fridge that works great.
Robin Whitworth says
Great idea Sarah!
Julee says
Thanks for this information!
So if you want to use a couple different oils, you make separate bites for each oil?
The Paleo Mama says
You sure can!
Shani says
Can you use coconut oil if you have silver filling?
The Paleo Mama says
You might want to check with your dentist on that!
Christina says
Yes, I do. Started oil puling since my last dentist visit. When I went in this last time he told me that my teeth look the best since he started seeing me 20 years ago! It makes whiter teeth, teeth feel cleaner and helps with over all health.
Brittany says
I am doing this right now! I put a little cocoa powder in one of them and it tasted too good. Probably not the best for oral hygiene but I had to try.
Tiare says
Great tip! My husband carries around a vial of VCO so he can oil pull throughout the day. I’m sure he’d appreciate the less-messiness of oil bites!
Charlotte says
but if that’s all you have, why not. You could slice them in half or thirds after. You might need to let them soften slightly after popping out of mold. Jackie this is such a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing.
Maria says
This is such a good idea! I keep meaning to make this a practice, but don’t have any oil in my bathroom. This would make it easier. Now I’m wishing all my ice cube trays (of various shapes) weren’t in storage! I have little heart ones that are probably the right size.
Tiffany says
If i wanted to make a batch of these bites to have on hand. Your list of 7 oils you can use for different reasons……Can I use all those oils in one batch or just 1 or 2 oils? All seven seems like a lot to put in at once. I love oil pulling and I get my EO kit tomorrow so I am so excited to try adding the EO in !
Sabrina says
Would these be ok for kids 9-14?
Thanks
Pat says
Is there an essential oil that would help with sensitivity?
Marie says
This is a neat idea. Thanks 🙂
Seija says
I made these tonight in an icecube tray, I just measured a tablespoon into each then added my EOs to them. they turned out pretty well! Probably a little more work involved getting them out of these versus the silicone but I couldn’t wait! My daughter and I plan to try them in the AM! Thanks for sharing this!
Debbie says
Once you are done swishing….do you spit out the oil?? So many oils are swallowed…but I am thinking this one you spit out?
Jackie Ritz says
Yes, you need to spit it out, but not in the sink because it could clog the drain. Spit it into your garbage can.
Marjie Rootz says
Can you do this in the evening after brushing teeth?
Dan Greene says
This is way more convenient than scooping out the coconut oil with a spoon like I have been doing. I’m making these today. Thank you for this idea!
Jane says
Is it absolutely necessary to swish for 15 minutes? I’m not sure I could do this for a full 15 minutes.
Jackie Ritz says
If you want the full effect, you need to swish for 15 minutes. Just swish while you are doing something else in your morning routine, the time will go more quickly than you realize.
Angie says
I love this idea! Definitely beats chiseling it from the jar.
Do you think it would still be effective to spit it out half way through and start over with a new one right away for the next half? Long before 15 minutes is up I have way too much in my mouth to continue. I only start with 1 to 1 1/2 tsp.!
Another question, is it OK to use a citrus EO? Or are there any that should not be used? The only one you listed that I could tolerate is peppermint, and I really don’t care for it. (My husband is allergic to melaleuca, and both of us are bothered by many smells/fragrances.)
Thanks!
BTW, love your site!
Claudia says
Is there a reason you don’t mix the essential oil with the coconut oil before pouring into the tray? It seems like the EOs would be super strong in your mouth if it’s not mixed in advance.
mel says
I swish in the shower! When I use fractionated coconut oil, I just spit it down the drain. Guess I’ll just be pulling the trash can closer to the shower for this. Love the idea!
Jan says
don’t spit it out, I just swallow it, coconut oil has heaps of health benefits!
Reneep34 says
If you swallow, you’re swallowing the toxins that you just removed from your body…you’re supposed to spit it out after swishing!!
