The 21-Day Sugar Detox

A few weeks ago I started mentioning that I was starting the going to start the 21 Day Sugar Detox after I moved into our new home and got settled. My Vegan friend over at Tan Toes Strong Womanย messaged me and asked if we could join forces and do it together. I thought it was a fabulous idea! I think the thought of Vegan and Paleo coming together and doing the same eating plan is AWESOME. A Facebook follower said it perfect; it’s almost like Republican and Democrat coming together! The world needs more of us, different as it may be, joining arms. How boring would this place be if we were all alike.

So, here we are Vegan April and Paleo Jackie on our quest to detox our body from sugar and carbs. Why are we doing this? Well, if you jump over to April’s blog you will read that 6 months ago she made some incredible life changes. First of all, she quit smoking!!! That’s a huge accomplishment in itself. She’s lost 30lbs since becoming dietary vegan, 20% body fat, and she can run an ultra marathon. However, when she came off her high blood pressure meds, she is right back to +150/+100. So, she figures it is most likely genetic, but wants to give it one more shot without pills and see if sugar may be the culprit. I think she is pretty awesome already!

“I am already getting the “seriously?” questions. It is interesting how some folk’s first reaction to self improvement is defensive as if you are making a judgement against them versus a simple desire for progress in yourself.” – April

Why am I doing the 21 Day Sugar Detox? Well, I have, literally, been in transition for 6 months. I have not gained a pound. I have lost a few, but I still have 20lbs to go before I am at my healthy weight. I’ve lost 50lbs eating Paleo, and it’s still working. But, I have run into some serious plateau’s…and with the move, I have not ate the greatest. I need to refocus. I’m also doing it as part of Lent. I wanted to give something up physically, and I wanted it to be uncomfortable.

The 21-Day Sugar Detox

I am almost embarrassed to post my before pictures because I just haveย such a long journey ahead of me. However, I’m gonna suck it up and post them. I’ll include my before Paleo picture just to show you how far I have come (really to remind myself!). I am hoping to drop some more weight in doing this detox and to cut my reliance on stevia, butter, and baked Paleo goods.

I’ll share with you what I eat day-to-day basis. So far this morning, I have had a few glasses of water, 2 cups of coffee with full fat coconut milk, a little leftover chicken, and a spinach omelette with avocado and salsa on top. I am satiated and do not feel like I am on a diet!

Please follow me on Facebook for more interaction during this detox!

These next 3 pictures are my current. I do NOT think that 21 days will change my body much. However I do think that I will lose some bloat in my stomach. As you can see, I carry most my weight in my upper thighs and butt. I am muscular underneath the fat, so I’m also hoping I will become more defined as I lose a little more weight. Depending on my results, I may do the detox twice in a row. backreal frontside

Your before and after paleo pics are so similar to mine! I had a lot of weight around the middle that I could never shake (not that I tried very hard). After starting Crossfit and paleo, my waist went from a US size 16 to 12. My hips, thighs, and butt however haven’t changed much. Eager to see how the sugar detox goes! May have to try it myself!

I’m doing Crossfit too! I’m around a 12/14…so yes, very similiar. I’m hoping this bust me through my plateau and combined with crossfit, it should be a good butt-kicker!

Good luck on the sugar detox! I will be following your progress and might actually do it. I don’t even really like sugar but i need some in my morning coffee. Thanks so much for introducing me to bullet proof coffee, that’s the ONLY WAY I drink my coffee now, it is SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bullet Proof coffee?? So I will admit, I first thought you were talking about a brand name…you know like Seattle’s Best or something…

Gotta love Google ๐Ÿ™‚ I am going to try this after the 21DSD…my butter has a corn or soy derivative in it so although it isn’t dairy, it is still a no go ๐Ÿ™‚ Time to rock Day2!!

I love this! im 25 Always a size 6-8(NZ sizing) However prior to moving to Australia i gained 20Kgs!!!! And have struggled to get rid of it ever since- i am a modest 71Kgs (148punds?) however since the gain have had joint problems, fatigue problem and mood issues. So i started with ex and diet . . . yeah right! i lost a kilo gained a kilo even with alot of effort i lost 5kgs and put it all back on withing a few months of slacking.
Howver since i started Paleo, and then Crossfit ive lost a solid 4KGs even with the occasional slip i havent gained anything- but im Platauing at only 66.5KGs ๐Ÿ™ its a bit unmotivating- but im not strict against sugar as such. I switched to NO sugar in my coffee ever- coming from sugar AND syrups AND cream everytime to cold turkey plain coffee and i have it black no milk as often as i can handle without backsliding. I switch bread for home made cocomut bread with coconut nectar to sweeten only, i make paleo pancakes and limit maple and fruits- but im seeing health benefits- but no pant-fits hahaha that i was hoping for, im far from toned despite not being”over weight” so im really inspired by this post as at crossfit i meet alot of paleo fans and a few vegans . . i think what you two are doing is great!! and ill definately be following and hope i can make the effort to do the 21-days sugar free along with ๐Ÿ™‚
    Keep up the good work!!

Thank you Samantha! Keep up the hard work! ..and take measurements, because when doing weight training or crossfit, I have noticed that I may not lose weight, but I do lose inches. The scale is not always accurate of success! Keep it up!

Good Luck on the 21 day Sugar Detox!

It is better to detox longer, even up to 60 days if you can make it.

I have been wanting to try this detox but I’m afraid to because I exercise a lot. Do u think this detox would interfere with my training?

No, not at all! It has an athlete modification. Basically, you eat extra carbs in the form of squash and sweet potato on workout days.

I am so curious about how to do the 21dsd as a vegan! Their website seems to have pulled that info down, and your friend Vegan April’s site is down, too. What’s up? I need some help, please! Any ideas?? Thanks!
