Sometimes you just need a dry barrier on your little ones bums and making your own homemade baby powder is so easy. Plus, the store-bought baby powders have TALC in them. Let me tell you about talc….
Think asbestos.
Think cancer.
Don’t believe me? Go to Cancer.org and see for yourself. Breathing in talc is TERRIBLE for your lungs and your putting it on a baby’s genital area, is even worse.
Now, now– don’t go feeling all guilty on me and start thinking you are a bad mom. You are now an informed mom, so you can make the changes you need!
This recipe is simple, easy, and nourishing to your baby’s bottom and it’s cloth diaper safe (see my cloth diaper system HERE)!
If you have a really irritated bum, then you might want to try my Healing Salve or Tallow Butt Balm recipe!

Hi Jackie! I love your facebook page and follow it daily. I can’t wait for your book to come out! My question with this recipe is, when do you add the essential oils? I assume it is the end, but am not positive. And how do you keep the mixture from clumping up after you have added the essential oils?
Many thanks,
Sherri
The Paleo Mama says
Add before your last pulse. The oils should absorb well and not cause clumping.

Thank you! Wow- I didn’t use baby powder for my little one because I never saw a need for it but I did not know about the ingredients. I’ll pass this information along!

This is GREAT! Personally, I am a baby-powder addict (due to our hot, humid Texas weather), and although I buy the cornstarch version, it is still impossible to know how ‘pure’ it is. Ordering the stuff to whip up a batch of this next week. Thanks:-)

Do you know of anything to get rid of facial hair?
Debra says
any tricks to getting it chopped up all the way? i love the feel of it except I have little flakes left. I dumped back into the food processor without much luck.
thanks!

Hello and thank you for this! We no longer have babies in the house but we do use powder on a regular basis and I didn’t realize how awful talc is for you.
I made this last night and it came out perfect! I ran the food processor for probably 10 minutes total between the constant run and pulse, stopping and checking every few minutes until it looked good. No clumps, no flakes, and it smells wonderful! I was worried it might smell too “perfumey” for my husband, but he said he likes it and he’s using it, so that’s good enough for me!
I thought about trying to make a double batch next time if this worked out, but a lot of the powder was trying to escape my food processor, so double would probably make a huge mess. However, it was super simple to make and I had fun doing it, so I won’t mind doing it again (and again and again).
I just took our store-bought powder and dumped it in the trash and reused that container – perfect.
Thank you again!

Will this baby powder still work in hair to remove grease and oils?
Jackie Ritz says
It would probably work, but would be somewhat difficult to rinse out. Why don’t you try adding 2-3 drops of Grapefruit essential oil to your shampoo. It is a great tonic to get rid of greasy, oily hair.

that’s a great tip! thank you for sharing!

Is this safe to use with cloth diapers or would it contribute to a buildup that needs to be stripped? Love the ingredient list!
Jackie Ritz says
Yes, it’s safe to use with cloth diapers, which is the only diaper I ever used.

Can I use something besides oatmeal? I don’t have a food processor. Do you think I could use a blender for this?
Jackie Ritz says
I think you could omit the oatmeal and double up on the calendula flowers. You can try using a blender, but remember that you want to get the mixture finely ground so it does not irritate your little one’s skin.
