Pregnancy Essential Oil Support Kit

December 12, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 1 Comment

Pregnancy is one of those times where pregnant women reach for toxic solutions to their most common pregnancy symptoms. Hey, I did the same thing. My former self was oblivious to what I was using and putting in my body during pregnancy.

That was when I started asking questions….

“What side effects does this cause?”

“How does this affect my baby?”

I now use and recommend doTERRA essential oils to many, many pregnant women to date. doTERRA essential oils are pure, free of pollutants, synthetics, and contaminants and ethically and sustainably sourced.

As someone who has suffered multiple miscarriages, I am extremely careful with ANYTHING I put on my body, including essential oils. It is common for you to do a google search and find all kinds of warnings about using essential oils if you are pregnant. It’s sad that much of that uneducated advice scares many women into running to the convenient store and using something off the shelf (that has way more side effects and toxins).

Essential oils that are laden with impurities and synthetics DO pose a legitimate threat to women who are pregnant. This is what led me to doTERRA. They have a  stringent 11 method testings for EVERY, single batch of essential oil and their transparency about the oil is above reproach.

With that being said, I do not know your body, only my own, and when I am pregnant I make sure I stick to the advice that comes from NAHA on what oils to avoid during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. This is one of the best lists I can find that comes from a very reputable source.

Essential oils to avoid during pregnancy

The beautiful thing about essential oils is that there are MANY alternatives for these oils that are not recommended during pregnancy.

If you have never used essential oils before, please talk with your midwife or OBGYN doctor before beginning ANY new health protocol. But most of all, do your own research and homework and learn the basics of essential oil usage.

I, personally, do not use oils internally in my first trimester of pregnancy. There are 2 other powerful ways to use essential oils during the first trimester and those are aromatically and topically. This is a matter of opinion based on what I know of MY BODY. Seek out guidance from your midwife or aromatherapist before taking essential oils internally. And NEVER take just any essential oil internally! Make sure they are extremely pure, like doTERRA.

I don’t know about you, but my skin was super sensitive during pregnancy. Make sure you dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil. You, simply, add a drop or two of essential oil to a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to your area of concern.

With all this in mind, this is my pregnancy essential oil support kit that you CAN PURCHASE from me! Details below.

AromaTouch “Massage” Blend. doTERRA’s proprietary blend, combines the unique benefits of oils known to provide relaxing and comforting effects to your joints and muscles and lessen tension. This blend includes Cypress, Peppermint, Marjoram, Basil, Grapefruit, and Lavender which is perfect for those sore and tired feet. Use some coconut oil and add a few drops of AromaTouch to the coconut oil. Apply on any sore or tired muscles, joints, or bones. This blend is excellent for back labor!

Balance “Grounding” Blend. This blend has a warm, woody aroma that creates a sense of calmness and well-being. When you’re pregnant, your hormones and emotions are all over the place. This blend includes the oils of Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy “Tanacetum annuum” essential oil  (not to be confused with the oil from common Tansy “Tanacetum vulgare” which is not recommended during pregnancy), Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus which help to ease anxious feelings and promote a sense of relaxation. This is a common blend that is diffused during childbirth! I like to apply this to my wrists and back of my neck as a daily perfume to help me feel more grounded and balanced emotionally.

Melaleuca “Tea Tree” Oil. So when I was pregnant, my hair did some wacky things, including falling out. I, also, had red patches on my skin and definitely was not lucky enough to have that “pregnancy glow” that so many people are blessed with. Melaleuca is known for it’s cleansing and rejuvenating effects on the skin. It’s also an incredible immune booster and can help protect you from environmental threats.

OnGuard “Protective” blend. This is another powerful immune boosting blend that is a great alternative to synthetic options for immune support. It includes the combination of Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils. I recommend this blend to be diluted if you are using it topically because it includes some “warmer” oils. My recommendation to pregnant women is to diffuse this blend in their home to help boost their immune function.

Lavender Oil. This essential oil is cherished for it’s unmistakable aroma and powerful benefits of calming and relaxing. For pregnant women, this is a necessity. I like to apply topically to my shoulders before bed (or put a drop on my pillow) and/or to add a few drops to an essential oil diffuser. Another great way to use Lavender during pregnancy is to take a relaxing bath with it. Fill your tub up and add 1 cup of epsom salt and 10 drops of lavender!

Wild Orange. This is a fantastic oil to help you wake up! It increases alertness and is very energizing. Pregnant mamas – can I get an AMEN! It has a very uplifting and invigorating scent to it. You can also use it to clean with. Just add 10 drops to about a cup of vinegar and wipe down your sinks, counters, bathrooms and toilets. It contains no toxic chemicals that pregnant women should not breathing in!

Peppermint. This will be your go-to oil in the first trimester, ladies. It can help reduce bloating, gas, and occasional digestion. I recommend adding a few drops to your hand and then add a teaspoon of coconut oil. Rub over belly in a circular motion. It also is wonderful for promoting healthy body temperature, so if you are feeling overheated, you can add a few drops to the back of your neck. Another benefit of peppermint is that it promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing, so if you have the sniffles, then sniffing peppermint directly out the bottle is very beneficial. Ps – it is suggested to not use peppermint essential oil at the end of your pregnancy or during breastfeeding because it *could* diminish breast milk supply.

Deep Blue “Soothing” blend (used 2-4 weeks after childbirth). This blend has very soothing and cooling effects on sore muscles and joints that you can feel almost immediately. It includes the oils of Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus. It can be extremely beneficial to postpartum mothers who are achy and have very tired muscles. Because of the Camphor and Wintergreen, this is not recommended to be used during pregnancy. AromaTouch blend is safer and has very similar benefits.

Essential Oil Petal Diffuser. You will want to have a diffuser that you can add your oils to and you are able to enjoy the aromatic benefits of those essential oils. Diffusing is a very effective way to use oils during pregnancy, childbirth, and with your new baby. You simply fill up your diffuser with water and add 5-7 drops of essential oil to it. Diffusing during labor and childbirth is a very common way to promote a peaceful birthing experience. The petal diffuser in my Pregnancy Kit has three timed settings – 1, 2, and 4 hours – allowing you to customize the release of essential oils into the air. We use this as a nightlight as well for our children since you can turn off the LED light if you don’t want it.

Fractionated Coconut Oil. This is a feather-light coconut oil that is in it’s liquid form. It won’t harden up on you and become difficult to use. It’s ideal for diluting your essential oils with and applying topically. It’s odorless too, so if you don’t like the smell of coconut, then there’s no worries of an off-putting smell…hello 1st trimester!

What is Frankincense Oil Good For?

December 3, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 1 Comment

It seems fitting that Frankincense was one of the precious gifts presented by the Wise Men many years ago to Baby Jesus. Frankincense was known as a precious incense, very costly, and was burned ceremonially by the temple priests. Its gift from the Wise Men to Baby Jesus was a symbol of that little baby’s own gift to mankind as our King of kings.

Still renowned today as one of the most prized gift, this resin is used today in the form of a precious Frankincense oil. Frankincense oil has extraordinary health benefits that we are going to go into you, but I wanted to make sure you knew this very important news. During the month of December, Frankincense oil is a gift that I would like to give to you! When you purchase a qualifying starter kit through me, Frankincense oil is your for free! I want to give you this extraordinary oil that could help to “gift” you this holiday season with feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness. Hey, if it’s good enough for Baby Jesus, it’s good enough for you!

Click here to learn how to get Frankincense oil for free during the month of December ’16!

Its Powerful Benefits

Holidays—as wonderful as they are—can become so busy and chaotic that they zap us of the very energy and strength we need to accomplish all the things we deem so “important and necessary” to make the holiday so memorable to our families and friends.

That’s when this powerful essential oil really shines. It has benefits that seem perfectly suited to counteract the chaos we have allowed into our lives at this time of year.

It promotes feelings of relaxation

dwp5-15_fc_tv-1-2

Relaxation?! Yes one of the primary benefits of Frankincense oil is its ability to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance our mood (which may have become a little Scrooge-like) as we rush into all the holiday preparations.

Do you need a little relaxation? Try some of these ways to benefit from Frankincense’s powers.

  1. Have you reached the end of a chaotic day and find yourself filled with anxious feelings? Mix 1-2 drops of Frankincense essential oil with fractionated coconut oil and apply it to your temples and the back of your neck. Sit back and feel its comforting effect.
  2. The holidays bring more than chaos to your little ones—it brings excitement and anticipation. So much excitement and anticipation that bedtime becomes, shall we say, a little like a nightmare? Sleep seems impossible, and getting them relaxed and calm just doesn’t happen easily. Frankincense oil can help your children relax and be ready for bed. Try rubbing some of my Whipped Sleepytime Rub on your children’s feet before bedtime. Then spend a few quiet moments with them (you may want to rub some on your feet first!) reading a holiday story, or talking quietly about the importance of Christmas.
  3. How about “the mood.” Do you have to admit that you are just a little Scrooge-like when you get home from a busy day? Remember that frankincense is a great mood balancer. Try diffusing it in the room as you gather for a calm evening meal, or diffuse it while you sit together as a family and try to relax. Say “bye bye” to the Scroogy mood by adding 3-4 drops of Frankincense oil to your diffuser along with 2-3 drops of Douglas Fir and 2-3 drops of Balance.

When we are tired, everything seems so very much worse.

—Jane Green

It supports healthy cellular function

I know…you aren’t really thinking about your cells right now. You’ve probably got cooking, shopping, decorating, wrapping, baking, partying, and lots of others things on your mind. But trust me—even our cells have trouble keeping up with the mad pace of the holidays. They need a little help with healthy regeneration, and Frankincense oil is just what can help with that.

Try some of these helpful tips.

  1. Maybe you’ve been neglecting your own healthy beauty regimen. Maybe the cold, blustery weather of the Christmas season has caused wind damage, drying your face, and causing some seasonal skin imperfections. Try making some of my DIY Facial Serum, which uses Frankincense oil along with Lavender and Geranium and Myrrh (another gift from the Wise Men to Baby Jesus). If you apply a drop or two of it before you go to bed, the powerful regenerative effects of Frankincense will restore your skin to its healthiest state.
  2. In the busyness of the season, it’s easy to find that you or your family members have gotten some minor cuts, scrapes. You can apply the power of Frankincense to these areas and find your health returning. Try mixing 1-2 drops with fractionated coconut oil and dabbing it gently on the affected areas.
  3. You can speed up the regeneration process by adding some frankincense veggie capsules to your daily supplementation. Put 1-2 drops in veggie capsule, and take one daily to support healthy cellular function. In this busy season you may find it beneficial to take two or three capsules each day.  (Only use high-quality essential oils internally like doTERRA).

The cells in our body react to everything your mind says.

It is a wonderful support during periods of a weakened immune system

It’s almost a double whammy that the greatest problems with our immune system comes right at the same time as the holidays. Put several people together—including kids—who live in separate locations and experience diverse seasonal bugs, and it’s almost a given that someone, maybe everyone, is going to get a little under the weather! That’s when Frankincense can shine! Try some of these solutions.

  1. When you are gathered together as an extended family and group of friends, keep your diffuser (essential oil diffusers come in most of my essential oil starter kits HERE) working by diffusing 2-3 drops of Frankincense oil with 2-3 drops of On Guard near the party. Add a little Douglas Fir or Holiday Spirit oils, and you’ve instantly supplied the holiday aromas.
  2. If your little ones bring some seasonal symptoms from school or holiday parties, be ready with a rollerball filled with 4-5 drops of Frankincense and 4-5 drops of On Guard, then filled with fractionated coconut oil, so you can rub this healthy potion down their spine and on their feet daily, as needed. Here’s an article I wrote on using essential oils on kids.
  3. Don’t forget that Frankincense oil is a natural household cleaner, and will help protect against environmental threats that linger on your counters and sinks . Use it in a diffuser to reduce indoor pollution, and add it to your favorite cleaner to disinfect any room or surface in your home.

Happiness lies, first of all, in health.

—George William Curtis

Holidays are a joyous time, meant to remind us of the vital importance of family and friends. However, with all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy for the joy of the season to turn into stress. Don’t let the spirit of Scrooge take over your life and the life of your family.

Access the power of Frankincense oil to keep you filled with peace and happiness—the real spirit of Christmas.

Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store. Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and of generosity and of goodness.

Achieving Balance Between Work and Life

November 1, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 1 Comment

I remember spending time in the park near my house when I was growing up with my sister, Dinah. One of the things we liked to do was to see how long we could balance ourselves on the seesaw without either of us touching the ground. It didn’t last for long—one of us was sure to try to throw the other one off balance so she would fall back to the ground.

Sometimes trying to balance our lives between all the work that has to be done and all the fun we want to have with family can be like sitting on that seesaw. Work/life balance is like an elusive dream at times. Most people today seem to be torn between juggling heavy workloads, managing relationship and family responsibilities, and squeezing in outside interests. More than one in four Americans describe themselves as super stressed. And that’s not balanced—or healthy.

screen-shot-2016-11-01-at-11-46-48-amI’ve been one of those super stressed people. And I soon discovered that in my rush to get it all done, I began failing at getting anything productive done in any area of my life. My concentration left. I became irritable, and our family life suffered. I was like that Tom turkey in our barnyard that chases everyone who comes near, and will soon become our Thanksgiving dinner as a result. No one wanted to get near, and if they did, my grouchy funk chased them away. Believe me—when Mama wasn’t happy, no one was happy.

Trying to find a balance between work and life has become one of the greatest challenges most people face today. One study found that 70 percent of American workers struggle with finding a work-life system that works for them.[1] It doesn’t matter if you are just one of a host of other workers who are working in a business owned by someone else, if you are the owner of a business of your own with employees working for you, or if you are an entrepreneur working for yourself (like I am) only. Work can take a serious toll on your personal life. You face responsibilities…long hours…inevitable stress…an uncertain future…and sleepless night just trying to juggle it all.

I want to take a look at some of the steps we can take to achieve a better balance between work and life. With the busiest season of the year now upon us, what better time to take a critical inventory of how well we are balancing work and life. It doesn’t have to be an impossible dream.

Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

—Dolly Parton

Steps to Finding Balance

Step 1: Set Goals That Align With Your Passion

This is a process more than a single step. Many people are simply working to pay the bills and buy the family necessities. So take the time to find out what it is that you are passionate about. Maybe you’ve known since childhood just what you wanted out of life and that is exactly what you are pursuing. But for most of us it takes some time to find out just who and what we are meant to be.

Once you discover your passion—your calling in life—take the time to set specific goals with actions and milestones you can track. Write down your goals. Create a vision board you look at every day. (You can find out more about creating a vision board here.)Your vision board will keep you focused on your goals. Instead of just letting life happen, your goals enable you to make deliberate choices about what you want from life and how you want to spend your time.

Remember that your goals need to be progressive—there may be many twists and turns along the way before you reach your final destination of becoming who you were created to be. For example, when Frank and I began dreaming of a future that included building a self-sustaining lifestyle and being able to work for ourselves instead of others we were nearly $50,000 in debt and tied to just making enough money to pay the bills—clearly not enough to live out our dream. So one of the most important first goals we set was getting out of debt. We focused all our efforts on doing just that, and met that goal in merely six months. (Read our story here.)

Review your goals regularly, and stay focused on reaching the milestones that support your goals. Work intentionally, Minimize your distractions.

Balance, peace and joy are the fruit of a successful life. It starts with recognizing your talents and finding ways to serve others by using them.

—Thomas Kinkade

Step 2: Learn to Be a Better Manager of Your Time

To reach your goals, you will have to dedicate time to them. Map out a typical week, and figure out what your priorities need to be—work, family time, exercise, homemaking, children, and personal time. Start with the most important and least flexible responsibilities. If you have a job outside the home, this is one of them. Another may be spending time together as a family. Eliminate the least important things so you can concentrate on your priorities. Here are some simple steps that can help:

  • Track your time
  • Have a plan of action for each goal
  • Make a to do list
  • Be flexible with your time
  • Identify time-sapping habits
  • Learn to say no
  • Eliminate unnecessary obligations and tasks

Managing your time wisely will take practice. But it is the solution to a chaotic, stress-filled life. Going through the process of prioritizing your time is a great way to find out what is really important to you, and to eliminate the time robbers that you can live without.

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.

—Michael Altshuler

Step 3: Get Rid of Distractions

Distractions throw you out of focus, and take more of your energy and time than you realize. It has been estimated that it can take 20 minutes or more to regain your focus on a task once you give time to a distraction. Figure out what it is that distracts you first. It may be:

  • Facebook or Twitter
  • Surfing the internet
  • Playing games
  • Checking email
  • Getting coffee
  • Daydreaming

Here are some ways you can work at eliminating those bothersome distractions.

  1. Turn off instant notifications on your phone, tablet, and computer.
  2. Put your cell phone on silent or vibrate—or, better yet, leave it in a room away from you.
  3. Set some ground rules with people around you.
  4. Figure out some sort of Do Not Disturb sign.
  5. Work in scheduled chunks of time.
  6. Clear your work area of visual clutter.
  7. Read/answer email at scheduled times only twice a day

screen-shot-2016-11-01-at-11-59-31-amOnce you have done whatever you can to eliminate those distractions, now concentrate on building your capacity for attentiveness to your tasks. This was a hard one for me. Since we work at home, I was constantly distracted by just about anything—kids asking questions, sounds in the barnyard, phone ringing constantly, homesteading chores I’d rather do like making cheese or DIY health and beauty products with my essential oils. So we created a work plan, and then we worked the plan. We set up our office in the basement, scheduled unbroken times for work, hired a nanny to entertain the kids during working hours, and used technology to schedule when and how long the phone calls were allowed. We divided the work load, and respected each other’s focused times.

Distractions will always be around. But you can learn to get the distractions under some control, and can build your ability to give focused attention to the tasks at hand.

You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.

—Winston Churchill

Step 4: Make Time for Yourself

This is a hard one for many people. Author Thomas Moore has said, “We seem to have a complex about busyness in our culture. Most of us do have time in our days that we could devote to simple relaxation, but we convince ourselves that we don’t.”[2] We can always find something that needs doing or someone who needs our attention. So it’s time to put yourself on your priority list! Me time is not something you should feel guilty about. It give you an opportunity to relax, refocus, and recharge. Here are 5 steps to making ME time a reality:

  1. Decide you deserve some time to yourself each day.
  2. Decide how best to spend me time.
  3. Evaluate the things that are wasting your time each day.
  4. Ask for help with chores that don’t have to done by you alone.
  5. Create a daily ritual.

Maybe your ME time is taking a relaxing detox bath, listening to music, taking a walk or meditating. Make it something you look forward to. ME time for me is getting a cup of coffee and sitting on my porch as I allow the beauty of my surroundings to clear my mind. It’s curling up alone with a good book or my Bible. It’s listening to my favorite worship music. It’s my time to simply bask in the sounds of silence.

screen-shot-2016-11-01-at-11-59-06-am

Stop wishing you had more time to yourself, and commit to carving it into your schedule. You will be amazed at how your ME time changes your perspective and feeds your soul. I read the story of a group of Americans who traveled to Africa and hired local guides to show them the land. They were up at dawn every day, ready to go. For six days they pushed their guides to hurry up and get moving. On the seventh day, their guides refused to move. “Come on, let’s go,” shouted the Americans. But the lead guide replied quietly in his broken English, “We no go today, we rest. We let souls catch up with bodies.”

Determine right now to let nothing interfere with your ME time. Let your soul catch up with your body.

Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.

—Deborah Day

Step 5: Make Time for Family

A recent survey says that parents and children have less than eight hours together in total each week.[3] A strong family gives its members the support they need to make it through life’s toughest spots. To build a strong family relationship, you must prioritize time together to build family rituals that give each family member the attention needed. Family rituals help to define who you are as a family. It gives time to share experiences with one another, and to reconnect.

Family time brings your family closer. You make lifelong memories, and create an environment that builds self-esteem and character in your children. The number one thing your children want most from you is time.

screen-shot-2016-11-01-at-12-03-21-pmBecause we work from home, it’s not hard for our family to all be home together. But it is hard to ensure that we are spending quality time together—not just quantity time. But we have made family time one of our highest priorities, and it works. Sure, our quality time might be taking care of baby farm animals, making soap from goat milk, or mucking out the barnyard. But we make it fun, and we do it together. We have scheduled times for fun activities, and we spend time talking about our family goals and simply playing together.

Here are some important reasons why you need to make family time a priority.

  1. There will be a time when you can’t spend time together.
  2. It help you practice acceptance and compassion.
  3. It gives everyone a sense of value.
  4. It creates shared laughter.
  5. It occupies your mind.
  6. It unleashes your creative side.
  7. It gives you a new perspective on your home.
  8. It encourages a better path for kids.
  9. It gives you a place to share important things.[4]

Children grow up and are gone before we realize it, so let’s not waste the time we have with them now. How do you spend your time with your family? Have you made family time a priority? If not, it’s time to do just that!

In family relationships, love is really spelled T.I.M.E.

—Dieter f. Uchtdorf

Have You Found Balance in Your Life?

Hopefully these suggestions for finding a better work/life balance has been helpful to you. Often the lack of clear direction and goals can waste our time and energy and contribute to imbalance in our lives. A life that gets out of balance is much like a car tire that is out of balance. It will make the operation of the car rough and unsafe. Tires in perfect balance can give a smooth and comfortable ride. Before you plunge head first into the busyness of the holidays, take some time to ensure that you have done everything you can to find that fragile balance between what you do and who you are.

When you have balance in your life, work becomes an entirely different experience. There is a passion that moves you to a whole new level of fulfillment and gratitude, and that’s when you can do your best… for yourself and for others.

—Cara Delevingne

Introducing Spikenard Essential Oil

September 29, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 4 Comments

spikenard-essential-oil

I am so pleased and excited to be able to tell you about Spikenard Essential Oil. I, along with many others, have been waiting for the availability of this powerful and purifying oil with many therapeutic uses.

This oil is available to purchase through doTERRA on October 3, 2016!

Spikenard Essential Oil has a long historical significance, being used in ancient times by many cultures. It was part of the Ayurvedic medicine herbal tradition of India, and was treasured in Egypt as a luxury. It was a main ingredient in ancient perfumes, including the consecrated incense described in the Bible and the Talmud. It was used by Achilles in Homer’s “Iliad” to perfume the body of Patrokios. It was a common flavoring in many ancient Roman and Medieval European foods.

It is mentioned several times in the Bible, and I especially love the story in John 12:1-10, where Mary of Bethany use the very expensive Spikenard perfume she carried in a beautiful alabaster jar (about a pint) to anoint the feet of Jesus, then using her own hair to wipe his feet. This was an extravagant display of her devotion to him just two days before His death, the cost equaling a total year’s income at that time. It has become a symbol for many of total abandonment and adoration for the Lord, with no regard to the cost.

Spikenard is a flowering plant of the Valerian family, a flowering plant about three feet tall with pink bell-shaped flowers, and is native to high altitudes in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal. The spikenard sourced from there is of the highest quality, and the quality of any other source of Spikenard oil could not be recommended for any therapeutic use. dōTERRA’s Spikenard essential oil is harvested by steam distillation from the roots of the plant.

Primary Benefits

Spikenard has a woody, musky aroma that is very uplifting and promotes feelings of calmness and relaxation. It is frequently used in aromatherapy and meditation for its grounding properties. It has a long historical significance of being very therapeutic and purifying to the skin, and promotes clean, healthy skin. Let me tell you a little bit more about some of the specific benefits for this powerful oil.

  • Renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin
  • It can be applied to minor skin irritations to protect them from threats
  • Deodorant—Many people find it very useful for helping to eliminate body odor.
  • Digestive—Its stimulating, calming effect is effective in eliminating occasional stomach discomfort.
  • Its calming quality has long been utilized to soothe nerves and promote healthy sleep.
  • Respiratory—It is very useful in helping to support healthy respiratory function caused by environmental and seasonal threats.
  • Antioxidant—It protects the body from wear and tear and from occasional outside threats.
  • Many people find that just the aroma alone is able to lift them out of depressed moods.
  • It helps to support healthy digestive function and keeping your bowels running normal
  • Emotions—This oil is very beneficial for helping to produce mental peace and harmony in the emotions.
  • Spikenard is a root oil, which helps promote a healthy inflammatory response. It is recommended that you apply Spikenard to your spine, using a downward application, neck to the base of the spine.

How to Use Spikenard Essential Oil

Preparing to Use Essential Oils for the First Time

Because Spikenard is a new essential oil to many people, and I am introducing it to you for the first time, I am aware that there may be some of you who have never used essential oils therapeutically before this. Because of this, I recommend that you introduce their use to your body in stages.

Begin by introducing Spikenard essential oil with another essential oil that is known to seldom cause any negative reactions, like Lavender essential oil. Mix the two oils together and just dab it on your skin in a non-sensitive area as a test. If you have no reactions, or have positive reactions therapeutically or emotionally to the test, then you can use essential oils in a greater quantity.

Try making a rollerball with Spikenard, Lavender, and fractionated coconut oil. Use on your feet, temples, back of neck, wrists, and over your heart. If you continue to have positive responses to your use of these oils, begin to include the addition of stronger oils for their therapeutic uses. These stronger oils may include Eucalyptus, Breathe, Cardamom, and Peppermint essential oils. Be sure that you use only essential oils of the highest therapeutic-grade, and of the purest quality like doTERRA.

It won’t be long until you are enjoying the therapeutic and emotional qualities of many essential oils. You may even want to choose to become a part of our Well-Oiled Machine (The Well-Oiled Machine is a health and wellness team led by my husband, Frank, and I. We are dedicated to sharing natural solutions for your health and home. For more information, email me at jackie@ritzessentials.com) or check out my info page here.

Using Spikenard Essential Oil

There are so many ways that you can use this oil therapeutically and emotionally. I want to highlight just a few of these uses for you.

  • As an enhancer of other essential oils you use. It is a great oil to layer topically on your body to promote the effectiveness of other essential oils.
  • To loosen muscular and joint discomforts and tension. Because of its enhancing qualities, you can make an amazingly effective recipe for alleviating muscle and joint discomfort and for eliminating stress.
    • This rollerball recipe includes: 1 part Roman Chamomile essential oil, 1 part Clary Sage essential oil, 1 part Petitgrain essential oil (another great new dōTERRA oil), 1 part Spikenard essential oil. Top with Hazel Nut oil or, if not available, with fractionated coconut oil
  • To eliminate flaky scalp Spikenard can be uses to eliminate flaky scalp by adding it to you shampoo, or by applying it directly on your scalp. I recommend a method that has worked well for me: Add several drops of spikenard to a tablespoon or so of coconut oil and rub it into your scalp much like you would a face mask. Then cover your scalp with saran wrap, and leave it in place for an hour. Then shampoo as usual.
  • To eliminate pesky skin problems that seem impossible to get rid of. Spikenard is well tolerated by all skin types and can be applied neat if desired, even on the skin of children. I recommend that use Spikenard instead of melaleuca in my All Purpose Salve recipe here!
  • Use an inhalation method to help with respiratory issues caused by seasonal and environmental threats. Add 2-3 drops of Spikenard essential oil to a bowl of steaming hot water. Drape a towel over your head and inhale the steaming vapor for a few minutes.
  • One of the most relaxing therapeutic uses for Spikenard is through an aromatherapy massage. You can prepare a massage cream by using 1-2 ounces of a great massage oil (I recommend dōTERRA’s AromaTouch Blend) and adding 15-20 drops of Spikenard oil. It will detoxify the body and stimulate the entire circulatory system.
  • Try preparing a soothing, rejuvenating tubful of warm water. Add a dispersant like coconut oil, jojoba oil, whole milk, almond milk, or even sea salts to bond with the Spikenard essential oil. Try using 1-2 ounces dispersant with 5-6 drops of Spikenard oil, and step in to this relaxing essential oil experience.
  • Prepare a deodorizing spray to use whenever and wherever you want to deodorize or disinfect. Use 1 ounce of vodka or rubbing alcohol, and 1 teaspoon of Spikenard essential oil. Add this to 7-8 ounces of distilled water in a spray bottle. This works great on linens, towels, furniture, rugs, and leaves a refreshing clean smell.

Why I DIY & Why YOU Should, Too!

August 25, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 1 Comment

By Dr. Eric Zielinski

Don’t miss your chance to attend the online and free Essential Oil summit and learn more about DIY and more!

Most people don’t realize how lucrative “beauty” is. It is one of the fasting growing industries in the world, and recent reports suspect that the global beauty market will reach $265 billion in 2017! Now, don’t get me wrong, making money isn’t a bad thing. What concerns me is the real cost that the marketplace doesn’t like to talk about; namely, the health risks associated with a vast majority of products sold on store shelves today.

This, my friend, is why my wife and I DIY and why I hope you will, too!

Your Skin is a Sponge

The reason why we’ve become aware of the harm that body care products can cause is because of the discovery that human skin is literally a sponge. Scientists have proven that more than 60% of the chemicals in our body care products absorb through our skin and into our blood stream, but this is just one part of the equation! Think about all the hairspray you inhale when doing your hair, the lipstick that you unconsciously lick throughout the day, or the minute mascara particles that enter your eyes!

If you’re using an abundant life giving concoction made with a healthy base and therapeutic grade essential oils, then you have nothing to worry about. You can do a happy dance because you’re doing your body good! On the other hand, if your favorite cosmetic line is filled with harmful fillers and preservatives, then you better on dance yourself to the doctor’s office for a early check-up because you’re poisoning yourself!

Yes, I jest, but this is no laughing matter. This is serious business, folks, and the safe rule of thumb to live by is if you won’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin!

Hidden Toxins in Your Body Care Products

It is becoming increasingly difficult to purchase pure, wholesome body care products and unsuspecting customers are duped by labels claiming they are “all natural, “organic” and “GMO-free.”  Yes, these qualities are all very important to maintain the integrity of your health, but they are not a guarantee of purity because harmful fillers and preservatives are oftentimes slipped in your favorite lotion or cream.

Some of the most dangerous (and common!) culprits to be on the lookout for are:

  • Coal Tar
  • DEA (Diethanolamine)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Fragrance/Parfum
  • Mineral oil
  • Lauryl sulfates
  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol (PEG)
  • Talc

The bottom line is that you need to be avid label reader, and make sure that you are not being inadvertently poisoned by the products that you’re using every day!

Easy DIY Natural Solutions

Two of the most dangerous culprits in the beauty market are cosmetics and lotions; both of which are extremely easy to do-it-yourself (DIY).

Cosmetics

By and large, the vast majority of women use one or more cosmetic items to enhance their look. Sadly most of these are made up of synthetic ingredients that are caked on their face for hours on end. We mustn’t forget what we have already learned – these chemicals are blinked into your eyes, seeped into your pores, and accidentally licked into your mouths every single day of the year and this accumulates over your lifespan.

The primary way to stop this vicious cycle is to implement some easy-to-implement natural solutions and lipstick is the first place to start. Essentially a jazzed up lip balm, you can DIY by following this recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons sweet almond oil or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax / beeswax beads
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa or Shea butter
  • Dash coloring powder (beet, cinnamon or powder)
  • Essential Oils (where The Paleo Mama recommend purchasing from)

Instructions

  1. Melt oil, beeswax and butter in a saucepan over low heat.
  2. Stir in optional coloring powder
  3. Remove from heat and stir in a drop or two of essential oil for fragrance and nourishment, like frankincense, geranium, lavender, lemongrass, nerloi, rose, or ylang ylang.
  4. Place mixture in lipstick tubes or a small tin container.
  5. Put in refrigerator to cool and use when desired.

As a word of caution, don’t forget that many cold-pressed citrus oils are phototoxic, meaning they can cause excessive sensitivity when exposed to the sun. If you’d like to use citrus oils in your lipstick, be sure to use the ones on this list:

  • Bergamot Oil (FCF)
  • Blood Orange Oil
  • Lemon Oil (Steam Distilled)
  • Lime Oil (Steam Distilled)
  • Mandarin Oil
  • Sweet Orange Oil
  • Orange Leaf Oil
  • Satsuma Oil (Cold/Expeller Pressed)
  • Tangelo Oil
  • Tangerine Oil
  • Yuzu Oil

Lotion

We all can use a little moisturizing love to take care of the skin that works so hard for us now and again, right? But, at what cost are we doing so? Granted, lotion is a very basic product (or should be), but most contain a mile-long list of chemicals that are a recipe for nothing good for our health!

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the harmful fillers and preservatives like parabens, mineral oil and fragrance when purchasing your lotion. If you get discouraged because you can’t find one with the fragrance that you enjoy without all the junk in it, then doing it yourself is the way to go. And, oh, how simple it is!

By and large, the easiest and most effective moisturizer is a simple ointment reminiscent of something our ancestors used to enjoy. All you need is a healthy, non-toxic base and some essential oils. Easy peesy!

  • 1 oz of the carrier oil of your choosing (fractionated coconut, jojoba, almond, olive, grape seed are all great options)
  • 5-7 drops of your favorite essential oil (geranium, helichrysum, frankincense, lavender, myrrh, rose and sandalwood are all good choices)

If you want a thicker lotion or cream-type of consistency, try:

  • 1/4 cup Shea butter
  • 1/8 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax
  • 20 drops of essential oils

Don’t forget the warning about photosensitization and citrus oils. You certainly don’t want sunspots and excessive burns, because you’re going to be out in the sun too much one day.

Essential Oil Starter Kit Giveaway

August 17, 2016 by Jackie Ritz 34 Comments

I’m on a mission to help other people see how simple and easy it is to make more natural swaps in their health and their home.

Most of the products that you might be using around your home, have harmful ingredients in them that can cause major issues to your health.

My favorite all-natural ingredients to use are essential oils. They are so versatile and can be used for so many different things.

What are essential oils?

  • Pure extracts from plants that have been distilled or cold-pressed
  • Highly concentrated and can be 50-70 more times powerful than herbs
  • Address problems verses masking the symptoms
  • Very affordable, pennies per drop
  • If you are prepared, they are available at home immediately to use.
  • Work at the cellular level to protect your cells from environmental threats

Why doTERRA essential oils?

  • Plants are grown and harvested in their natural habitat all over the world
  • Each back of oil undergoes multiple 3rd party testing to certify purity
  • Therapeutic-grade which is the highest quality of essential oils on the market

How do I use them?

  • Diffuse them into your home using an essential oil diffuser (my favorite way!)
  • Apply them topically to feet, chest, back of neck, head, and troubled areas
  • Create your own recipes using essential oils (body butter, salve, deodorant, etc)
  • Make on-the-go Roller Bottles for you and your children
  • Make homemade cleaners using oils like lemon and OnGuard “protective” blend

How do I get them?

Because there is no governing agency that overlooks the purity and quality of essential oils, I chose to go with a company that makes purity their highest priority. doTERRA sets the standard for the purest oils that you can find in the world today.

doTERRA essential oils are sold exclusively through essential oil educators like me. Working from home, these advocates, like myself, introduce, educate about, and sell essential oils in their local markets, through person-to-person contact, and globally through websites (like this one!).

When you purchase a starter kit, you become a “wholesale member“, which gives you the privilege of getting all your future essential oils at wholesale price…just like Sam’s or Costco!

CLICK HERE to check out the starter kits I recommend to people who want to jump into using essential oils!

Do I have to sell the oils? Of course not!

Do I have to place a monthly order? No way! You purchase your oils when you want! No minimum order is required!

So are you ready to try to win a starter kit for free??? Follow the directions below to be entered to win an essential oil starter kit from me!
