I did it…I DID IT!!! I made an Iced Bulletproof® Coffee!!! If you don’t know what a Bulletproof® Coffee is then go read this post right now and check out the Bulletproof Executive website. This is my adaption of the Bulletproof® recipe.
The first time I tried to make this was a complete fail. What was I thinking throwing butter into the blender with ice?!! What a sticky mess! However, I found the key!
I live in Florida and the thought of a hot coffee in the afternoon just makes me start sweating. So, I wanted to try to make an iced Bulletproof® because I love my Bulletproof® and sometimes I just need that mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Sometimes, I just need the extra fat too in the afternoons. Whatever your case may be, you NEED to try this!!!
Iced Bulletproof® Coffee
Step 1: In the morning when you are making your coffee, make about 2-3 cups extra and make it a little stronger. Add an extra scoop or two of coffee.
Step 2: When the coffee is ready grab a mason jar and pour 2-3 cups of coffee into it. (Make your morning Bulletproof® at the same time.)
Step 3: Put (at least) 2TB of Kerrygold butter into the mason jar and 1-2 TB of MCT Oil . This mason jar coffee is going to be your Iced Bulletproof. Blend until frothy with a stick blender. If you don’t have a stick blender you can do this in a blender.
Step 4: Stick your mason jar coffee in the fridge for later or put a lid on it and bring it to work for later.
Step 5: When you need your mid-afternoon coffee pick-me-up, pour your mason jar coffee over crushed iced (or regular ice).
Step 6: Enjoy your fatty coffee and the buzz!
***This method worked for me because I had already emulsified the butter with the hot coffee in the morning. Once it cooled, it didn’t not chunk up. There may be tiny, tiny pieces that stick to the side of your jar or cup, but you will not taste any chunky butter.***

I TOTALLY needed this post, with spring approaching in MN (slowly since it is currently snowing outside my window) I was getting sad that I can no longer have my cold press with heavy cream but this is WAY better 🙂
Thanks!

We can’t do dairy or cocunut due to allergies… could I use ghee? any other ideas for a substitute for the kerrygold butter? That coffee looks amazing — but totally not worth the excema…
The Paleo Mama says
Yes you can do ghee! I know some people on Whole30 who use Ghee!

This is awesome, I was just thinking this morning that I wanted to try this as an iced coffee, great timing!

Thank you!! Can’t wait to make what will probably be my favorite summer afternoon pick me up!!

I’m in Florida as well and often need a PM pick me up (which I pay for through some drive thru on way home). I prefer ice coffee as well (once upon a time when I lived in northern states I couldn’t imagine drinking cold coffee…. not I would just rather have that over hot). I have plenty of mason jars….. and a thermos…. but that keeps the coffee hot during day. I can’t imagine the butter and oil don’t somehow harden because when I do my hot thermos coffee and it sits too long in my cup, I have chunks. It will be interesting trying this…….. I really hope it works as well for me as it did for you.

I have been trying to get an answer about whether it is OK for a women in menopause with a thyroid deficiency to consume bulletproof coffee. Is is possible for you to address this at all?
Thank you

I tried this recipe this morning! Well… I made it yesterday afternoon (because I like iced coffee in the morning and don’t drink it in the afternoon) and while it seemed fine when I checked on it in the evening, this morning it had unfortunately separated. I think it sat for too long in the fridge.
Just wanted to let you and anybody else know that! Tonight I will try making it just before bed and see if that works. Next step- making it in the morning and pouring it over a lot of ice to cool it! 🙂 Thanks for the hint about emulsifying BEFORE cooling- I have definitely made a chunky mess before.
The Paleo Mama says
Thanks for letting me know Jennifer! It usually doesn’t sit that long in my fridge 🙂 I can’t stay away from it!
Veronica says
I you have a Vitamix blender and your iced coffee separates you could just pour it in there for a few seconds or so to blend it back together.
Jill says
Mine separated too. I saw it earlier in the day and it was fine, but when I went to drink it in the evening it had separated. I just used my stick blender and whipped it back up! Yum!

In Dave’s new podcast he says use the same method as above but then stick in a blender and add in a few egg yokes to make it taste like ice coffee cream? gonna try it tomorrow
Jeff says
Did it taste like ice cream?

Question:
Do you just make the hot bulletproof as normal and then put the whole thing in the fridge, or just the butter& mct oil, and just place the oil/butter in the fridge? …and pour cold coffee over cold oil/butter?
The Paleo Mama says
YEs….that’s right. It’s that simple. Just make the hot version and put it in the fridge.
Michelle says
I just made the “hot” version this morning, and it was unbelievably good! It felt odd mixing coconut oil and pasture butter and putting it in my morning coffee, (it sounds wrong!) but it works for me. Will try iced very soon, looks tasty.

Definitely going to try this. I love seeing the mason jars, my BP coffee is always in a mason jar. I highly suggest you check out Re-cap lids, they’re flip top pourable lids for mason jars.
The Paleo Mama says
Oh fun!! I’ve never heard of them! I’ll have to check them out!

I just tried my first Bulletproof coffee. I think I may have just sworn off Dunkin’ Donuts forever!!! I usually drink iced coffee, but I tried the hot version today and was SAD when I drank the last sip. I couldn’t believe how good it is. I did put some in the fridge for the iced version tomorrow, but I don’t know, I may be good with hot. I happened on this post by accident, but I am so happy I did. Thank you so much for some great information. I look forward to checking out more of your recipes!

Thank you Kaitlin!!!

You’re welcome, thanks for posting! 🙂 I have now been making bulletproof coffee everyday for five days. My husband is thrilled that I am no longer spending a ton of money there, and I feel a lot better. I’m not sure if I have lost any weight, maybe a little, but I am also still indulging more than usual in the final week of summer (I am a teacher who goes back to work on Monday). I think (hope) I will notice a difference when I am back to my normal routine. I will say that I have not had the 2pm crash since starting with Bulletproof, and no desire to stop and pick up a coffee mid-afternoon. That must mean something, right?
The Paleo Mama says
Absolutely! Sounds about right!
Cynthia says
I was skeptical. Tried this today. Totally worked. Very, very little butter buildup
Thank you!
Jeff says
I just did this and my bulletproof coffee separated fairly bad. I chilled it in the freezer, then put it over ice and the butter chunked up. Do you think the bpc needs to be pretty cold before putting it on ice? Or do you think it won’t chunk up if I don’t put it over ice. If it’s cold and not chunky, I don’t really need the ice. Yes, I did blend all the ingredients after brewing the coffee.

Is this coffee kosher?? any body know

Thank you for this! I’m a Seattle girl; coffee runs in my viens! I’ve been wanting to try bulletproof coffee. Just found out about the company that makes the Upgraded products which led me on a search and found this! I’m an iced coffee girl, rarely drink hot.
Will be trying this the iced way!

I’ve been trying coffee with coconut oil only. when I blend the coffee/oil hot and drink it right away it is fine but when I leave it in the fridge, even for a few hours, the coconut oil congeals at the top and re-blending doesn’t stop it from being congealed. ive also tried cooling the coffee first and then adding the oil and blending, but it still doesn’t work. Any thoughts? I’m dying for an iced coffee with yummy coconut oil.
thanks

Hey how’s it going? I was wondering, how long can you let the chilled/refrigerated coffee sit for? Do you need to do it day of? I just want to see of much I can make at once for a few days and see how it goes. I want to have a pitcher full for the week if possible 🙂
Great article, thanks!
Cynthia says
This didn’t work for me. 🙁 Got chunky.
I may try it again. Not sure if adding collagen messed it up or not.
